Bartine Hot Springs (updated 2004)

Bartine Hot Springs are located in Antelope Valley about 18 km north of Klobe Hot Springs, in Sec. 5, T19N, R50E, and about 4 km north of the Bartine Ranch along Highway U.S. 50. Waring (1965) reported temperatures of 41 and 42°C for two springs issuing from a "tufa" mound. Reed and others (1982, p. 40, 124) reported temperatures of 44ºC and 46ºC, with estimated reservoir temperatures ranging from 47ºC to 130ºC. A flowing well is described from near the Bartine Ranch in Sec. 17(?), where a 47°C temperature was reported by Fred Bartine. Mariner and others (1982, p. 46) reported the well to be 148 m deep with an estimated reservoir temperature of 57ºC. Other artesian wells in the vicinity have temperatures of 14°C. These cold-water wells are probably all in the same water-bearing horizon, but the flow of the hot-water well was not affected by the drilling of the cold wells. In 1993, Mt. Wheeler Power, Inc. proposed drilling a 135-foot well for domestic use (Barton and Purkey, 1993).
