Thousand Springs

Hot springs are found near the Gamble Ranch along Thousand Springs Creek about -13 km north of Montello. A spring in Sec. 4, T40N, R69E has a reported temperature of 43.9°C (Hose and Taylor, 1974), and Gamble Spring near the Gamble Ranch is 21°C (Mifflin, 1968). Trexler, Koenig, Flynn, and others (1981; Table E2) were apparently unable to located the Sec. 4 spring, which is shown on the Twelvemile Ranch 7.5-minute Quadrangle map. A warm spring is also reported in Sec. 14, T40N, R69E, and the Gamble Ranch well no. 4 is reportedly 24°C and 64 m deep. Stearns and others (1937) reported a boiling spring in the area, but it is not known which spring this is. It could be Winecup Ranch Spring (Sec. 25, T41N, R64E) which is reported to emit gas, and thus might have been considered "boiling" (oral commun., Jan Roberts, 1994).
