Truckee Meadows Area (updated 2003)

The Truckee Meadows area ( figure) includes the Reno-Sparks urban area between the Carson and Virginia Ranges on the west and east, respectively, and from Peavine Mountain to the north to the Steamboat Hills on the south. Geothermal fluids are found at several localities in the Truckee Meadows (Reno-Sparks urban area). These vary from slightly anomalous water temperatures in shallow domestic wells to high-temperature geothermal resources which are utilized for electric-power generation. There is little information on the localized areas of thermal groundwater that Bateman and Scheibach (1975, fig. 4) reported northeast and northwest of Steamboat Hot Springs and northeast of Huffaker Hills (see figure). Groundwater temperatures in these areas are reported to be between 20°C and 30°C (Bateman and Scheibach, 1975, fig. 4); these are too low for most space-heating or related uses, and we know of no present geothermal applications in these areas. We describe other Truckee Meadows geothermal areas in more detail below.
