This section provides outlines of the chemistry used in
processing and assaying the Virginia City ores. The two main
topics, Ore Processing and Fire Assaying, each have a lab
activity attached at the end of the article. A lesson plan that
suggests a way to organize these articles into classroom lessons
is included under "Lesson Plans."
This picture shows the mine dump at the north side of Virginia
City, a remnant of the mining in the late 1800s. The dump
probably was merely rock that didn't contain precious metals in
high enough concentration for processing. This section describes
the ore processing that was used and the way miners knew the rock
contained enough precious metal to be processed.
