In this
section, we present an activity to help the reader gain or
improve a most important skill for the geologist, using and
creating maps. Then, we present background information about the
local and regional geology of the area. These two sections
provide the foundation for understanding the formation of the
Comstock Lode. This photo shows a road cut just north of Virginia
City. The rocks are discolored from slight alteration, but break
in large blocks so they are still the solid rocks that form the
mountains to the west of Virginia City.
