Prepare the finely ground rock either by grinding some rock in
a ball mill or with a mortar and pestle or using a mixture of
rock and dirt found around the yard.
Prepare a solution of aluminum sulfate by mixing two teaspoons
of powdered aluminum sulfate, potassium aluminum sulfate
(potassium alum), or ammonium aluminum sulfate (ammonium alum)
into one liter of water.
Lime is used directly. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Tips
The flocculant produced by the aluminum sulfate in basic
solution (aluminum hydroxide, Al(OH)3 ) forms over a
period of several minutes.
