  1. At the same time (use two hands or two partners), slowly invert both bottles five times making sure the dirt is off the bottom. Set the samples down upright and make observations every 30 seconds. Concentrate on seeing how the suspended particles are collected by the falling aluminum hydroxide particles.
Control (on the left) and test (on the right) solutions just after water was added to the control bottle to the same level as the alum solution and the alum solution was added to the test bottle. Both bottles were shaken Thirty seconds after the alum was added to the test (right side) solution. Note that the level of suspended particles had dropped to about half way up the bottle. One minute after the alum solution was added to the test bottle (right side). Note that the level of suspended solids has fallen to about one third of the bottle. One and a half minutes after the alum solution was added to the test bottle (right side). Note that the level of suspended solids has fallen to about one quarter of the bottle. Two minutes after the alum solution was added to the test bottle (right side). Note that the level of suspended solids has fallen some,and that the solution is becoming clearer.
