Supplying the Mines

Mining the silver of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City took
materials and people. Here is a picture of Virginia City today,
looking east from the top of Mount Davidson. Notice the lack of trees and some bare
ground. Both of these conditions are a result of the lack of
water in the area where normal yearly precipitation is about 8
inches a year. The location of the city, where the silver and gold were found, meant that all of the
materials had to be brought in.
