Timbering
This section outlines two of the physics problems that had to be solved to make the Comstock mines a money-making venture. Water was a scarce commodity and a pipeline using a siphon was built to deliver pure water. Later the Comstock Mining district had mines that grew so large that no conventional method of reinforcing the walls and ceiling would work. A new method called square-set timbering was invented. Learn about these problems and their solutions in this section.
