I would like to see the older county reports updated. I would also like to see more mapping around the smaller mining districts throughout central Nevada. Much of this has been done by various exploration groups and individuals and could probably be compiled and field checked through guidence by the NBMG or GSN.

There is a CLEAR and IMMEDIATE NEED for the NBMG to conduct detailed Quaternary fault mapping of the rapidely urbanizing areas bordering the Reno-Sparks-Carson City region, and to make these map pubically available. As a local consultant, I have seen more than one development project dismiss investigating Quaternary fault surface rupture hazards simply because the NBMG has no such maps covering these outlying areas. The only Quaternary fault map providing "blanket" coverage of the Reno-Sparks region, the Reno sheet Quaternary fault map (scale 1:250,00),according to its author, John Bell, largely focuses on mapping the valley floors not the surrounding and rapidely urbanizing areas. Alternatively, the "Guidelines for Evaluation of Potential Surface Fault Rupture/Land Subsidence Hazards in Nevada" should be modified to require at least an examination of aerial photographs of sites in these outlying to identify geomorphic features indictive of Quaternary faulting. This loophole needs to be eliminated ASAP.
I would love to see the NBMG scan aerial photographs covering the Reno-Carson City-Fallon area, then sell this information on a series of DVD/CD or on the Web. This would benefit the private sector by allowing more effecient and thorough studies that, in turn, benefit the community at large.
The more publications that the NBMG can make available on the Web the better for all concerned. To be used in a serious manner these publications should be made available in GIS formatted files (e.g., shape files), and as .pdf files for the masses.

I would like to see electronic or other archiving of the air photo collection before any more of the collections disappear.
If hours were changed, I would prefer 8 to 5, although I have been able to adjust my schedule to meet the current open hours so it is not a critical issue to me.
Overall, the NBMG is a great resource that is not duplicated elsewhere.

Open a southern Nevada Office. The Utah Geological Survey has a satellite office in Cedar City. I don't see why NBMG can't have a small satellite office in Las Vegas.
Update and improve the NMBG website. The website is too bland. It needs to be more colorful with lots of photographs. It needs to be an exciting and fun site for the public to browse. Academics and industry scientists will still be able to find what they need. With the world-class geology in Nevada, there is no excuse for having such a boring website.
Focus more on applied Nevada-specific research and cater more to the public. Although I understand that NBMG is affilated closely with the University of Nevada, I have always felt NBMG has had too much of an academic research focus. I have been a professional geologist in Nevada for 17 years and have always felt that Utah and now even Colorado have better and more public-oriented and responsive state geologic surveys.

Just a quick note regarding the USPS delivery of the publication I recently purchased...
The box containing S16 (Geologic Tour - Las Vegas) was left in my driveway, in the rain. Good thing you shrink-wrap your publications, otherwise we would be trying to figure out how to replace the order! Other contents were spared being declared a total loss by virtue of my arriving home early, and the dumb luck of the package having been placed on top of another package that took the brunt of the "base flow". The included map is OK, perhaps not a crisp as intended - but no need to replace.
I thought you might like to have this information for future reference.

I'm a lowly GIS tech creating a map series of the NE 1/4 of NV. I'm looking for better populated places than I have, better roads than I have, better hydro than I have for my drill-down maps. THe State of Nevada, across the spectrum of public sites has none of this kind of data available with a mouse click. I'm also a spoiled lowly GIS tech. People in NV are the best at creating more localized data. The census won't do if for me. I don't need Clark County data - that's too detailed. I'm looking state-wide. Now I'm going to have to call in favors from the insiders....
